WASHINGTON: President Donald Trump issued a warning on Monday, indicating that the United States will impose tariffs on Russia within the next 10 days unless Moscow takes decisive action to end its three-year conflict in Ukraine.
While speaking to reporters on Air Force One, Trump mentioned he hadn’t received any response from Russian officials and suggested that time is running out. He dismissed concerns regarding rising oil prices, stating that the U.S. has the capacity to boost its production to offset any potential impact.
“I’m not sure if it will affect Russia, because Vladimir Putin is likely intent on prolonging the war,” Trump said. “But we will implement tariffs and other measures as necessary.”
Once known for fostering a cordial relationship with Putin, Trump has grown increasingly frustrated with Moscow’s refusal to consider a ceasefire. The new deadline hints that Trump is now prepared to follow through on his threat of sanctions, after previously hesitating.
Earlier Monday in Scotland, he threatened to impose secondary sanctions on both Russia and nations that continue to buy its exports unless there’s measurable progress.
US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent told reporters that he discussed the possibility of secondary sanctions with Chinese officials during recent bilateral talks. He warned that Beijing could face steep tariffs if it continues purchasing Russian oil.
Former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev, a close Putin ally, took to X (formerly Twitter) to criticize Trump, accusing him of engaging in “ultimatums” that could lead to U.S.-involved war.
Trump, under pressure to broker peace in Gaza, has highlighted his previous efforts in resolving conflicts between India and Pakistan, as well as Rwanda and Congo. Before returning to the White House in January, he campaigned on a promise to end the Russia-Ukraine war in a single day.
