President Donald Trump announced on Tuesday that he is postponing his highly anticipated trip to Beijing to meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping. The delay is due to the upheaval caused by Iran’s conflict, which is disrupting US foreign policy and complicating efforts to reduce tensions between the two largest economies.

“We are rescheduling the meeting… We’re working with China. They are agreeable to it,” Trump told reporters in the Oval Office. The trip had been scheduled for March 31 to April 2, marking Trump’s first visit to Beijing during his 14-month second term. He now plans to make the trip in about five or six weeks.

This postponement introduces additional uncertainty into markets and international diplomacy, especially as the Iran conflict has led to higher oil prices, threatened shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, and increased focus on energy security globally.

Trump’s aggressive stance toward Iran has unleashed a series of military and economic consequences, attracting attention from across his administration. The image of Trump on a lavish state visit is increasingly seen as incongruent with the current economic challenges facing the United States and the return of American service members killed in the Middle East—highlighting tensions between diplomatic image and national security realities.

Iran has responded to joint US-Israeli attacks with threats of firing upon vessels passing through the Strait of Hormuz. Trump has called on various countries, including China, to assist in ensuring safe passage for ships through this critical waterway, which handles about 20% of the world’s oil trade daily. However, China, which imported approximately 12 million barrels of oil daily during the first two months of 2026—the most in the world—has not yet directly responded to his requests.

The Chinese government did not officially announce the dates for Trump’s visit and typically does not reveal Xi Jinping’s schedule far in advance. In preparation, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent met this week with Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng in Paris. Discussions focused on increasing US agricultural exports, including poultry, beef, and non-soy crops, as well as expanding access to China-controlled rare earth minerals and exploring new trade and investment strategies between the two countries.

According to a Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson, “Head of state diplomacy plays an irreplaceable role in guiding China-US relations,” underscoring the importance placed on high-level engagement despite recent tensions.
