Donald Trump, the former U.S. president, indicated on Monday that he has no plans to pursue the vice presidency in the 2028 election, despite some supporters floating the idea to extend his time in office.
“When asked about this aboard Air Force One, Trump responded, “I’d be allowed to do that,” referring to the possibility of running as VP. He promptly added, “But I wouldn’t do that. I think that’s too cute. Yeah, I’d rule it out because it’s too cute. I don’t think the people would like that. It’s not right.”
Trump has frequently hinted at the possibility of a third term, including publicly and through “Trump 2028” hats handed out at the White House. However, the 22nd Amendment of the U.S. Constitution prohibits anyone from being elected president more than twice. Some have suggested a workaround where Trump could serve as vice president while another candidate runs for president and resigns, allowing Trump to assume the presidency again. legal standing of this maneuver remains disputed.
Expressing his interest, Trump said, “I would love to do it. I have my best numbers ever,” when asked about a third term. When pressed whether he’s ruling out a third run, he replied, “Am I not ruling it out? You’ll have to tell me.”
He also praised Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, calling them “great people” who could run for president. “I think if they ever formed a team, it’d be unstoppable. I really do,” Trump stated.
