President Donald Trump greeted Japan’s Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi with a handshake at Akasaka Palace in Tokyo on October 28, 2025. The meeting focused on strengthening ties, with discussions covering shipbuilding, soybeans, and natural gas trade, according to sources. Trump also indicated interest in pursuing a trade agreement with China after his visit to Japan.

During the encounter, Takaichi, a close ally of former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and a supporter of Trump’s efforts, committed to advancing Japan’s military capabilities, including a plan to boost defense spending to 2% of GDP. She announced she would nominate Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize, and the two leaders signed agreements aimed at securing critical minerals and rare earth resources to reduce reliance on China. These deals involve joint projects in magnet and battery technology over the coming months and efforts to build stockpiles of essential minerals.

Trump expressed admiration for Takaichi, noting her strong handshake and congratulating her on being Japan’s first female prime minister. She presented Trump with Abe’s golf putter, a signed golf bag from golfer Hideki Matsuyama, and a golf ball crafted with gold leaf.

The leaders also reviewed Japan’s increased defense procurement efforts, and Takaichi praised Trump’s role in brokering ceasefires in Southeast Asia and the Middle East. She has also recommended Trump for the Peace Prize, emphasizing his international peace efforts.

Subsequently, Trump and Takaichi visited a U.S. naval base in Yokosuka, home to the USS George Washington aircraft carrier, underscoring the military partnership’s strength. Trump plans to meet with business leaders in Tokyo before heading to South Korea. There, he hopes to negotiate a truce in the ongoing trade tensions with China, aiming to stabilize the global economy.
