Trump appears to rule out a third presidential run, citing the constitutional restrictions that prevent him from seeking another term after his current one wraps up in January 2029. “If you read it, it’s pretty clear — I’m not allowed to run. It’s unfortunate,” Trump told reporters on Wednesday while on Air Force One heading to South Korea. This marks a shift from earlier remarks where he hesitated to completely dismiss the possibility of running again.
The 22nd Amendment of the U.S. Constitution prohibits anyone from serving more than two terms as president, although Trump has publicly toyed with the idea of a third term since winning his second in November.
House Speaker Mike Johnson stated Tuesday that he discussed the matter with Trump and determined there’s no realistic chance of amending the Constitution in time for a third presidential bid. “It’s been a good run,” Johnson said. “But both the president and I understand the constitutional limitations.”
He added that changing the Constitution would require two-thirds approval in Congress and ratification by three-quarters of the states—a process that could take up to a decade, which he described as unlikely to be feasible.
Some of Trump’s allies, such as former strategist Steve Bannon, have speculated about legal arguments that could challenge the two-term restriction. Trump has referenced this idea at rallies and promotes “Trump 2028” merchandise, although Johnson dismisses it as political posturing. “He enjoys stirring the pot and poking fun at Democrats who are panicked over the very idea,” Johnson explained.
At 79, Trump also pointed earlier this week to potential Republican candidates like Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio for the 2028 election. If he runs again, he would be 82, potentially becoming the oldest president in U.S. history.
