President Donald Trump stated Monday that reaching a peace deal to end the conflict in Ukraine is possible, as he met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and European leaders.
While addressing reporters at the White House, Trump mentioned that most participants favor an immediate ceasefire, but he remains hopeful a formal agreement can be achieved to prevent further aggression in Ukraine.
He anticipated that Russian President Vladimir Putin would soon release over 1,000 Ukrainian prisoners following a planned trilateral meeting with Zelenskyy.
“I believe President Putin also wants to do something positive,” Trump said at the start of the discussions with Zelenskyy and seven European leaders, predicting some “really positive steps” after the scheduled meeting.
“I know there are more than 1,000 prisoners, and I understand they will be released soon—perhaps immediately—which I think is fantastic,” he added.
