President Donald Trump has announced that there’s “nothing to hide,” calling for the release of files related to Jeffrey Epstein, the late convicted sex offender. He insists it’s time to move past this Democrat hoax, framing it as a distraction from Republican successes, including their recent victory over the Democrat shutdown.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump urged House Republicans to vote in favor of releasing Epstein case documents, emphasizing, “We have nothing to hide, and it’s time to move on.” This stance marks a shift, as he previously opposed releasing the files. His change of heart comes after House Speaker Mike Johnson suggested that releasing the Justice Department’s Epstein files could help clear Trump of any alleged connections to Epstein’s trafficking of minors.
Despite having been photographed with Epstein years ago, Trump has maintained they fell out before Epstein’s criminal conviction. Recently released emails indicated Epstein believed Trump “knew about the girls,” though the specifics of that claim remain unclear. Trump has dismissed the Epstein files as a Democratic smear campaign and has since directed the Department of Justice to probe Democrats’ ties to Epstein.
This dispute over the release of Epstein-related documents has caused a rift with some of Trump’s allies in Congress. Many of his most loyal supporters believe that the government is withholding sensitive information about Epstein’s connections to influential public figures.
Late Friday, Trump withdrew his backing of Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia, one of his top congressional supporters, after she criticized Republicans on issues including the Epstein files. Meanwhile, Democratic Representative Ro Khanna from California, who originally sponsored the petition for the files’ release, predicts that over 40 Republicans will support the effort.
The House holds a narrow majority, with 219 seats compared to 214 for Democrats, which could influence the outcome of any vote on the matter.
