President Donald Trump announced on Monday that he intends to approve the sale of U.S.-manufactured F-35 fighter jets to Saudi Arabia. He made this statement in the Oval Office, just one day before hosting Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman (MBS) for diplomatic discussions.
“I will say that we will be doing that,” Trump told reporters. “We’ll be selling the F-35s.”
This potential sale signifies a major shift in U.S. policy, with the possibility of altering the strategic military balance in the Middle East and challenging the United States’ commitment to preserving Israel’s qualitative military superiority.
Saudi Arabia has requested up to 48 of these advanced fighter jets, a deal worth several billion dollars. The purchase has already cleared a crucial Pentagon approval step ahead of bin Salman’s upcoming visit, according to Reuters. The kingdom has long expressed interest in Lockheed Martin’s F-35 jets. A White House official suggested Trump wanted to discuss the deal with the crown prince before making a final decision.
