An advisory panel selected by President Donald Trump has approved a design for a commemorative gold coin featuring his likeness, officials stated Thursday, a decision criticized by Democrats. The US Commission of Fine Arts declined to comment when questioned by AFP after several media outlets revealed the proposed design. The coin aims to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the United States’ founding.
One side depicts a prominent Trump standing with clenched fists on a desk, while the reverse features an eagle with its wings spread atop what appears to be a bell. The coin has no specified monetary value, and its selling price has not been disclosed, though similar coins from the US Mint have exceeded $1,000.
“We are excited to create coins that symbolize the resilient spirit of our nation and democracy, and there’s no better figure to represent those values than our current president,” said US Treasurer Brandon Beach. He added that this design will differ from the images of Trump planned to appear on two other coins: a circulating $1 coin and a one-ounce gold coin.
Last October, Trump dismissed all six members of the US Commission of Fine Arts and appointed his own picks, as he undertakes various renovation projects since returning to power in January. The most controversial include a ballroom at the White House and renovations to the Kennedy Center for the Arts in Washington, which Trump has renamed after himself.
Another panel, the Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee, had previously refused in February to include Trump’s coin in its discussion agenda. Since the signing of the Declaration of Independence in 1776, no nation has issued coins bearing the image of a sitting elected leader, argued committee member Donald Scarinci. Only monarchies or authoritarian regimes tend to feature their current rulers on coins, he pointed out.
