On Wednesday, a shooting at a Catholic elementary school in southern Minneapolis left three dead and twenty injured, according to a Department of Justice official who requested anonymity. The perpetrator was among those killed during the incident. The chaos unfolded just two days after the school reopened for the academic year at Annunciation Catholic School, which has approximately 395 students. Located in a residential neighborhood in the southeastern part of Minneapolis, the school is affiliated with Annunciation Catholic Church.
Authorities responded to reports of a man dressed in black carrying a rifle at the scene. Witnesses described children gathering for morning mass when the gunfire erupted. Local television footage showed frantic scenes of parents rushing under police tape to escort students out of the building. The children were dressed in green polo shirts paired with blue shorts and skirts.
Minnesota Governor Tim Walz issued a statement via social media, confirming he had been briefed on the situation and promising ongoing updates. He expressed concern for the students and staff affected, stating, “I’m praying for our kids and teachers whose first week of school was marred by this horrific act of violence,” without revealing details about potential victims.
President Donald Trump also commented, saying he had been informed about the shooting and that the FBI was on-site. He urged the public to “join me in praying for everyone involved.”
The Department of Homeland Security has been in contact with local authorities and is monitoring the development, according to Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem. Since Tuesday afternoon, three additional shootings in Minneapolis have resulted in three fatalities and seven injuries, police reports indicate.
