At least 23 individuals lost their lives in a fire that erupted early Sunday at a well-known nightclub in Goa, according to statements from Chief Minister Pramod Sawant and other officials. Several of the victims were tourists. The blaze started around midnight at a club located in Arpora, North Goa district, officials told the Press Trust of India.
“Today is a profoundly painful day for all of us in Goa. A serious fire at Arpora has claimed 23 lives,” Sawant posted on X. “I visited the scene and have ordered an investigation. Those responsible will face the strictest legal action—any negligence will be dealt with decisively.”
Speaking to reporters at the site, Sawant mentioned that three to four tourists died. One victim succumbed to burn injuries, while the rest died from suffocation.
Goa, a former Portuguese colony along the Arabian Sea, attracts millions of tourists annually with its vibrant nightlife, sandy beaches, and relaxed coastal vibe.
