A festive holiday weekend in northwestern Mexico turned deadly when a fire ripped through a discount store in Hermosillo’s city center, resulting in at least 23 fatalities and dozens of injuries. Families were celebrating the Day of the Dead with vibrant festivities honoring loved ones, when tragedy struck.
Governor Durazo stated that a detailed and transparent investigation has been ordered to determine the cause of the fire, noting that children were among those who lost their lives. Authorities indicated that most of the victims likely succumbed to inhaling toxic fumes, according to the state’s forensic medical team.
President Sheinbaum expressed her condolences via social media, conveying her heartfelt sympathies to the families of those who passed away. She also announced that aid teams had been dispatched to support the victims’ families and the injured. The Red Cross in Sonora reported mobilizing 40 volunteers and deploying 10 ambulances to assist, making six trips to hospitals.
While the precise cause of the fire remains unclear, some media sources suggest an electrical failure. City officials confirmed that the store, part of the well-known Waldo’s chain, was not targeted in an attack. Firefighters continue to investigate whether an explosion was involved in the incident.
