Later this year, the Team Fortress 2 Classic mod will make its debut on Steam, allowing players to revisit the early era of Valve’s iconic team-based shooter, a time when the game was focused more on gameplay than on collecting hats. Although the mod has been accessible since 2020, with ongoing updates, this marks its first official release on the Steam platform.
This announcement follows last week’s unveiling of the TF2 source code, which took the gaming community by surprise. Valve has a history of supporting mod developers, and this full release of the source code opens doors for both players and creators to rejuvenate the almost two-decade-old title.
The Team Fortress 2 Classic mod enhances the original experience by incorporating modern quality-of-life improvements while capturing the essence of the game from its initial launch period. Additionally, it introduces the Civilian class, taking inspiration from the original Team Fortress Classic, along with various themed weapons that increase the game’s whimsical charm.
Developer Eminoma has categorized the updates into two groups: “new-old” and “new-new.” The “new-old” features present nostalgic elements, including the Civilian class and classic weapons like the Nailgun and Tranquilizer Gun. Furthermore, a new Four-Team mode has been introduced, allowing teams in yellow and green to join the traditional red and blue teams in battle.
The “new-new” features consist of unique offerings such as new game modes. Players can now engage in Domination, Territorial Domination, and VIP Race if they’re looking for alternatives to Capture the Flag. The mod also promises enhanced graphics, custom weapons, and custom maps, plus an enigmatic chicken whose significance remains unclear.
With its launch on Steam, the Team Fortress 2 Classic mod will reach a larger audience. Eminoma has indicated that they plan to continue expanding the game, stating, “Expect more weapons, modes, and characters as Team Fortress 2 Classic evolves,” as noted on its Steam page.
