A female teacher was fatally shot on Thursday in Hat Yai district, southern Thailand, according to official social media statements from local authorities. The incident occurred at Patongprathankiriwat School, where a 17-year-old student allegedly used a stolen police firearm to shoot the teacher, Sasiphat Sinsamosorn, who was also the school’s director. Police detained the teenager shortly after the attack.
A female student was wounded during the incident, but her current condition remains undisclosed. Sasiphat was rushed to intensive care following the shooting but succumbed around 2 a.m. due to internal injuries and severe blood loss, the health ministry confirmed.
The school community expressed their condolences through a Facebook post, stating, “Although we have lost you, the memories and the kindness you shared will stay in our hearts forever.” The suspect, who has a sister enrolled at the school, reportedly has a history of substance abuse and had been discharged from a psychiatric facility in December.
Gun violence and firearm possession are notable issues in Thailand. Notably, in 2002, a former police officer carried out a deadly attack in eastern Thailand, killing 36 people, including 22 children, with a firearm and knives.
