Starlink, owned by Elon Musk—who previously maintained a close friendship with former U.S. President Donald Trump—has announced it will provide free broadband internet access throughout Venezuela until February 3. This initiative aims to maintain connectivity for the Venezuelan population.
According to a statement posted on X, the satellite internet constellation confirmed, “Starlink is offering free broadband service to the people of Venezuela through February 3, ensuring continued connectivity.” Elon Musk, CEO of SpaceX and Starlink, retweeted this message with a caption supporting the Venezuelan people.
This announcement follows a recent U.S. military raid in Venezuela, which resulted in the detention of President Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores. After Maduro’s abrupt capture and transfer to New York to face drug trafficking accusations, former President Trump claimed the U.S. was temporarily taking control of Venezuela.
During a press conference at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida, Trump stated, “We will manage the country until a safe, appropriate, and ethical transition can take place. We can’t afford to risk someone else taking over Venezuela who doesn’t prioritize Venezuelans’ interests.” He also proposed that U.S. oil companies would be allowed to operate within Venezuela, tapping into its substantial crude oil reserves. Trump pledged that major American oil companies would invest billions to repair Venezuela’s damaged oil infrastructure and begin generating revenue for the country.
He emphasized, “The embargo on all Venezuelan oil remains fully in place.”
