Dungeons and Dragons has reached a new height of popularity, and its virtual tabletop platform, known as Sigil, is now available for players. Sigil is characterized as an “immersive 3D virtual tabletop” that empowers users to create personalized maps, miniatures, and even incorporate special environmental effects. Imagine it as Roll20 but with an added layer of immersion in a three-dimensional space.
In a blog post on D&D Beyond, Davyd Barker provides an overview of Sigil’s functionality and how to get started. Signing up and experimenting with the platform is free; all you need is a D&D Beyond account. The good news is that it integrates seamlessly with D&D Beyond, allowing you to easily import your existing characters. The initial download features a basic experience that includes a ready-to-play adventure, a starter builder kit, and options for multiplayer gaming.

Sigil also introduces unique visual effects for spells, making magical encounters even more thrilling as vibrant animations showcase each attack. Additionally, when rolling dice, results are displayed on-screen for everyone to see, fostering a sense of camaraderie among players as they celebrate successes and commiserate over unfortunate rolls.
For those seeking more advanced functionalities, the Master Tier offers additional features at a free 30-day trial, after which it’s priced at $4.58 per month—an affordable option compared to similar services like Roll20. This tier enables users to host up to 15 separate multiplayer rooms, save an unlimited number of maps, and provides access to an impressive selection of 83 pre-painted miniatures, alongside 60 unpainted ones and 21 customizable mini outfits.

The Builder kits offer various themed options, including Crude Mines, Graveyard, Owlbear Forest, and Rustic Village.
This release signifies a full launch rather than a beta version. While there’s ample room for development, Wizards of the Coast has indicated that more features will be added in the future. This is promising for players who desire an immersive experience without the extra costs associated with traditional battle maps and miniatures.
