A senior US counterterrorism official resigned Tuesday in protest of the ongoing US-Israeli conflict with Iran, asserting that Iran does not pose an immediate threat to the United States.
Joseph Kent, the director of the National Counterterrorism Center, stated in his resignation letter to President Donald Trump, “I cannot, in good conscience, support the current war against Iran.”
A former Green Beret with multiple combat tours, Kent argued that Iran was not an imminent danger and claimed that the war was initiated due to pressure from Israel and influential American lobby groups.
He is the first high-ranking official from the Trump administration to step down in opposition to the Iran conflict.
Kent reflected, “Until June of 2025, it was understood that conflicts in the Middle East were traps that cost American lives and drained our nation’s resources.”
He accused top Israeli officials and prominent members of the American media of launching a misinformation campaign early in the administration to undermine the “America First” agenda and stir pro-war sentiments, encouraging a conflict with Iran.
“That campaign convinced you that Iran was an immediate threat and that a strike would lead to quick victory,” Kent said, calling this a falsehood reminiscent of the same tactics used to entangle the US in the costly Iraq War.
He emphasized, “I will not support sending our next generation to fight and potentially die in a war that benefits no one and is not justified by American interests.”
