In an impressive showcase, Samsung presented a Horizon: Forbidden West gaming experience running in real-time at 8K and 120Hz— or did they? The demonstration utilized a Samsung TV connected via HDMI, delivering a remarkably smooth framerate. While this achievement is certainly noteworthy, there are several factors that could make replicating it at home quite challenging (not to mention the hefty price tag associated with building an 8K-capable gaming rig).

To begin with, it has been reported that the Samsung television was customized in ways that have not been publicly clarified. The standard HDMI 2.1 interface lacks the bandwidth necessary for such high-resolution video output, although HDMI 2.2 is anticipated to accommodate more data. To work around this limitation, Samsung employed a technology known as Display Stream Compression (DSC), which happens to be a feature included in their televisions.

Moreover, it’s important to note that the game did not run in true, native 8K resolution. The setup utilized an AMD Ryzen 9800X3D processor combined with an AMD Radeon RX 9070XT graphics card, which is only capable of outputting a maximum resolution of 5K. Samsung achieved the showcased image quality by employing AMD’s FidelityFX Super Resolution 3 technology, akin to Nvidia’s Deep Learning Super Sampling (DLSS).
