Samsung has unveiled its most rapid consumer SSD yet, the 9100 Pro. This cutting-edge drive features some of the highest PCIe Gen 5.0 transfer speeds available, making it ideal for gamers, power users, and professionals who require swift storage for intensive tasks.

As per Samsung’s announcement, the 9100 Pro boasts sequential read speeds reaching up to 14,800MB/s, alongside sequential write speeds of 13,400MB. These capabilities make it nearly twice as fast as its predecessor, the 990 Pro, solidifying its status as the leading PCIe Gen 5 consumer SSD. The closest competitor is the Crucial T705, which achieves 14,500MB/s for reads and 12,700MB/s for writes.

The 9100 PRO SSD will be released next month, starting at $200 for the entry-level 1TB version. Samsung will also provide options for larger capacities of 2TB ($300) and 4TB ($550), with an 8TB model projected to launch in the latter half of 2025.

Beyond its speed capabilities, the Samsung 9100 Pro integrates an “advanced heat management system,” which includes a heatsink to counteract the heat generated by PCIe 5.0 SSDs. The 1TB to 4TB configurations have an 8.8mm-thick heatsink, while the 8TB version features a more substantial 11.25mm heatsink. Adding the heatsink increases the price of the 9100 Pro by $20, which is reasonable.

Even with its remarkable speeds, the uptake of PCIe Gen 5 SSDs remains low. Drives from PCIe Gen 4 and even Gen 3 deliver adequate and consistent performance for most daily activities, including high-resolution gaming. Additionally, not all motherboards are compatible with PCIe Gen 5 M.2 SSDs, as compatibility largely rests with newer Intel and AMD hardware.
