The official trailer for Project Hail Mary reveals a surprising twist: Ryland Grace (played by Ryan Gosling) insists he is not an astronaut. Yet, against all odds, this middle school science teacher becomes humanity’s last hope.
With the sun on the brink of collapse, Grace’s expertise in molecular biology may be the key to Earth’s salvation. Eva Stratt (Sandra Hüller) brings him on board Project Hail Mary, a mission aimed at reaching a star located 11.9 light-years away. This journey could unlock crucial insights needed to save life on our planet. “If we sit idly by, every living thing here will perish,” Stratt warns Grace.
Set to the haunting melody of Sign of the Times by Harry Styles, the trailer showcases Grace awakening from a coma in space. As his memories return, he resolutely pursues his mission, even encountering extraterrestrial life along the way.

Interestingly, this isn’t Gosling’s first role as an astronaut; he portrayed Neil Armstrong in Damien Chazelle’s critically acclaimed film First Man.
Project Hail Mary also features Milana Vayntrub and Lionel Boyce from The Bear.
The film draws inspiration from Andy Weir’s novel of the same name. If it seems reminiscent of The Martian, that’s because Weir penned that story too. The Martian was adapted into a successful 2015 film starring Matt Damon, directed by Ridley Scott, which grossed over $630 million worldwide and earned seven Oscar nominations.
Directing Project Hail Mary are Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, marking their first feature film since 22 Jump Street. Recently, they have focused on animated projects, including the acclaimed Spider-Verse trilogy, for which they won Oscars for producing Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. The screenplay for Project Hail Mary was penned by Drew Goddard, who earned an Oscar nomination for his work on The Martian.
The film hits theaters and IMAX screens on March 20, 2026.
