Russia’s first locally developed AI-powered robot experienced an awkward fall during its debut demonstration in Moscow.
Named AIdol, this humanoid robot was showcased at a tech event held at Yarovit Hall Congress Center.
A viral video from the event captured the robot taking its initial, somewhat sluggish, steps on stage. As it advanced, the robot raised its arm to wave at the audience before stumbling forward and face-planting.
Quickly, event staff hurried to shield the robot with a black cloth and hurried it offstage, abruptly cutting short the presentation. The scene ends with two others awkwardly attempting to conceal the mishap with a sheet, which also doesn’t quite succeed.
One viewer commented, “A bit embarrassing, I guess. But those guys with the sheet though!” Another added, “What’s worse is the sheet guy… total fail.” A different person asked, “Is this real? Why would they even show this?”
Vladimir Vitukhin, CEO of the Moscow-based robotics company Idol, attributed the failure to calibration issues, noting that the robot’s stereo cameras were overly sensitive to the venue’s lighting conditions.
“This is part of real-time learning,” Vitukhin explained, emphasizing that the incident offers valuable lessons for the development team.
According to Idol, AIdol can walk, handle objects, and interact with humans, capable of expressing up to 12 emotions through its flexible silicone face.
Despite the stumble, developers plan to deploy the robot in manufacturing, logistics, and public service roles such as banks and airports — although details on mass production have not been disclosed.
