Rivian R1S and R1T electric vehicle owners can celebrate, as the manufacturer is rolling out a major navigation upgrade for its users.
Through a collaboration with Google, Rivian is integrating Google Maps into its EVs, offering users all the functionalities they expect from Google’s mapping technology.
This integration will be part of Rivian’s version 2025.22 software update, which will embed Google Maps directly into the infotainment system of the R1S and R1T.
In contrast to Polestar vehicles that use a native Android Automotive system, Rivian opts to keep its own software overlay, enabling it to deliver unique features tailored to its users.
What can customers expect?
The incorporation of Google Maps provides Rivian drivers with live traffic updates and real-time estimated arrival times (ETA). Users can also view satellite imagery and click on points of interest to access additional details, such as operating hours and customer reviews.
Alongside the Google Maps functionalities, Rivian has ensured that drivers can access exclusive features like ‘Range on Arrival,’ which displays how much battery power will remain upon reaching your destination.

If your vehicle doesn’t have enough range to reach your destination, the navigation system collaborates with Google Maps to locate the most effective charging stations along your route. It will also update you in real-time about the availability of charging points.
These enhancements will also be visible in the Rivian mobile app, allowing users to plan their routes and discover points of interest before embarking on their journeys.
This advanced navigation system brings Rivian closer to competing with Tesla’s in-car technology.
The Rivian R1S and R1T, which start at approximately $71,000, provide a technological edge but still differ significantly in price compared to Tesla’s offerings, with the Model 3 starting around $35,000.
As discussions of a more affordable Tesla continue, Rivian may take some time to match Tesla’s entire lineup. However, the upcoming Rivian R2 is set to start at $45,000, and an even more budget-friendly R3 is anticipated in the future.
