Director Ridley Scott has shared some exciting updates about two highly anticipated films.
In a recent interview with The Guardian, Scott mentioned that Gladiator 3 is currently in development. He also noted that a third prequel in the Alien series might happen if he comes up with a compelling story for it.
Scott’s latest movie, Gladiator II, was a hit when released in theaters in 2024 and was named among the top ten films of the year by the National Board of Review. This upcoming third installment could generate even more excitement, probably focusing on Lucius (played by Paul Mescal) as the new ruler of Rome.
According to The New York Times, Scott plans to shoot Gladiator 3 after completing projects like The Dog Stars and his upcoming Bee Gees biopic—which is still in pre-production. Without a story idea for a new Alien prequel, it seems more likely that fans will see Gladiator 3 sooner rather than later.
Scott directed the first two films in the Alien prequel series, Prometheus and Alien: Covenant, as well as the original two Gladiator movies. While he hasn’t helmed the newer entries in the Alien franchise, he’s been involved as a producer for Alien: Romulus and an executive producer for the popular FX series, Alien: Earth.
Despite mixed reviews from critics and audiences, Scott’s Alien prequels have played a significant role in shaping the modern Alien universe, influencing the current hit, Alien: Romulus. Notably, Covenant ended on a massive cliffhanger, which has yet to be resolved after eight years. A third prequel from Scott could finally bring closure to the storylines he set up in his previous films.
With Scott open to creating both projects, fans of both the Alien and Gladiator franchises have every reason to look forward to what might come next.
