A recent report indicates that President Donald Trump made four attempts to reach Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the past few weeks, but all calls went unanswered, according to The News citing the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung. The German newspaper also recalls the surprise caused in India when Trump imposed a 25% tariff on the country and referred to its economy as “dead.”
Sources suggest that Modi appeared to feel disrespected, as evidenced by his reluctance to engage in a phone conversation with Trump—a sign of his irritation over US actions. Additionally, perceptions of Trump in India have shifted significantly, especially after he voiced intentions to strengthen ties with Pakistan.
Since Modi’s visit to Washington in February, the two nations have been negotiating a comprehensive trade agreement. Their goal is to boost annual trade to $500 billion by 2030, with an agreement initially expected to be finalized this fall. Although India has sent multiple delegations to the US for talks, the upcoming sixth round of negotiations, scheduled for August 25 in India, was canceled.
