Four children lost their lives and 17 others were injured in Rajasthan, India, when a school building’s roof caved in on Friday. Authorities fear many more could still be trapped beneath the debris.
Footage from news outlets showed local residents gathered at the scene, as rescue teams operated a crane to clear the wreckage. Reports state that students were in a government school in Jhalawar when the collapse happened.
The incident occurred around 8:30 a.m. local time at Piplodi Government School in Manohar Thana, within Jhalawar district. Officials confirmed approximately 40 children, along with teachers and staff, were present in the single-story building when it suddenly gave way.
Sources indicated the building was in poor condition and had previously been the subject of complaints. The school serves students up to eighth grade.
Rajasthan’s Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma issued a statement on X (formerly Twitter), promising that the authorities have been instructed to provide appropriate medical care for the injured children.
Some children were in critical condition, police officer Amit Kumar told PTI, as reported by The Economic Times. “Four children have died, and 17 others are hurt. Ten children have been sent to Jhalawar, with three or four in critical condition,” Kumar said.
According to The Indian Express, ASI Abdul Hakim from Dangipura police station identified the deceased students as being between 14 and 16 years old. Emergency responders from district administration, law enforcement, and education departments quickly arrived at the scene, launching rescue efforts.
The injured were initially taken to Manoharthana Community Health Centre, where doctors confirmed four fatalities. Eight severely injured children were then referred to Jhalawar District Hospital for further treatment.
