During his visit, Putin will engage in discussions with Modi and also meet separately with President Droupadi Murmu. Several intergovernmental and commercial agreements are anticipated to be signed, although specific details have not been disclosed.
This will be Putin’s first trip to India since December 2021, which was just a few months before he ordered Russian troops into Ukraine in February 2022.
The Kremlin emphasized the significance of this visit, highlighting it as an opportunity to comprehensively address the broad agenda of Russian-Indian relations, especially within their strategic partnership. Their relationship spans political, trade, economic, scientific, technological, cultural, and humanitarian sectors.
In recent years, U.S. officials, including President Donald Trump, have urged India to cease purchasing oil from Russia. Despite these pressures, India remains one of Russia’s major buyers of oil.
Trade sources report that India’s imports of Russian oil are expected to decline in December to their lowest levels in at least three years, dropping from high levels in November as Indian refiners seek alternative sources to avoid Western sanctions.
