Russian President Vladimir Putin stated Tuesday that Russia is prepared for war if Europe pushes for one, accusing Western leaders of attempting to undermine a deal on Ukraine prior to meetings with U.S. representatives.
These remarks coincided with high-stakes discussions in Moscow involving U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, President Donald Trump’s son-in-law, aimed at resolving the nearly four-year-long conflict in Ukraine. The diplomatic efforts had been intense and ongoing for several days.
“We’re not planning to go to war with Europe, but if Europe chooses to, we are ready now,” Putin told journalists in Moscow.
He further claimed that European leaders lack peaceful intentions and are siding with conflict, alleging that their actions are obstructing U.S. efforts to broker peace in Ukraine. Putin also criticized Europe’s modifications to Trump’s latest proposal for ending the war, asserting that those changes are solely designed to block negotiations and impose demands unacceptable to Russia.
The United States has proposed a 28-point plan to conclude the hostilities, which was later revised after criticisms from Ukraine and European nations, who believed it favored many of Russia’s maximalist stipulations.
While the plan has backing from Trump, many European countries worry that it could pressure Ukraine into concessions on territory and other demands. Europe, concerned about further Russian aggression, emphasizes that no unjust peace should be forced upon Ukraine.
The envoys from Washington are working to finalize the agreement with the approval of both Moscow and Kyiv.
