Caution: This article includes spoilers from the newest episode of Daredevil: Born Again.
The Punisher has made his comeback. In the recent episode of Daredevil: Born Again, Jon Bernthal thrillingly returns as Frank Castle, the notorious vigilante known as the Punisher.
This episode marks Bernthal’s first appearance as the character since the 2019 series, The Punisher, on Netflix. His return almost didn’t happen, as Bernthal had initially stepped away from the first draft of Daredevil: Born Again.
“Ultimately, I didn’t see it,” Bernthal shared with Entertainment Weekly. “I didn’t resonate with the version of Frank that they were presenting. It just didn’t align with what I believed would appeal to the fans and felt out of sync with the character. So we decided to part ways.”
In September 2023, Marvel decided to revamp Born Again, bringing in new writers and directors to infuse the series with a darker, more brutal tone reminiscent of the original Netflix series.
Dario Scardapane took over as the new showrunner for Born Again. With these creative changes, Bernthal found a renewed interest in returning to the role.
“They really included me in the conversation,” Bernthal explained. “We dove deep into Frank’s psychological and physical state.”

Daredevil: Born Again won’t be the final appearance for Bernthal’s Punisher character. He is set to star in a new Disney+ special, reminiscent of Werewolf by Night. Bernthal has taken an active role in this project, co-writing the screenplay alongside director Reinaldo Marcus Green.
“The narrative we’ve crafted is something truly remarkable,” Bernthal remarked about the upcoming special. “It captures the raw, psychologically multifaceted, and unyielding essence of Frank, where there are no simple solutions and every act of violence has serious repercussions. I’m thankful that they’re allowing me to explore these depths.”
The next chapter of Daredevil: Born Again will stream on Disney+ on Tuesday, March 25.
