The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has approved the use of Wi-Fi 7 and upcoming Wi-Fi standards in the 6 GHz spectrum (5925–6425 MHz), aligning with previously established parameters for Wi-Fi 6E. This decision positions Pakistan as one of the initial adopters in the Asia-Pacific region and underscores its dedication to digital innovation and tech leadership.
Wi-Fi 7 provides extremely high data transfer speeds, minimal latency, and enhanced reliability—making it ideal for 8K video streaming, augmented and virtual reality applications, and industrial automation. The deployment of this technology will help reduce network congestion caused by older frequency bands and cut broadband service costs, thereby boosting connectivity for homes, small businesses, educational institutions, healthcare centers, and smart city initiatives.
This move further demonstrates PTA’s commitment to narrowing the digital divide, strengthening network resilience, and fostering an inclusive digital economy in Pakistan.
On Tuesday, Shaza Fatima Khawaja, Pakistan’s Federal Minister for Information Technology and Telecommunication, announced plans to roll out 5G services in seven major cities within a few months. This promise follows the PTA’s 2024 annual report, which noted that despite increasing broadband penetration, Pakistan would face challenges transitioning to 5G technology—a concern highlighted by The News in December of last year.
There are concerns about the financial hurdles involved in adopting 5G, even amid growing use and adoption of wireless services like mobile networks and broadband. During the opening of the 26th ITCN Asia Expo at Karachi’s Expo Centre, the minister explained that steps are being taken to ensure more stable internet access across the country.
Khawaja emphasized that information technology would be a “core component” of the recently signed Pakistan-Saudi Arabia agreement, aimed at enhancing Pakistan’s digital infrastructure and boosting economic growth. She highlighted positive economic developments, noting that the country has moved away from default fears, inflation is decreasing, and macroeconomic stability is improving. She also pointed out that Karachi plays a vital role in the nation’s economic progress.
