The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has announced that the much-anticipated 5G spectrum auction is scheduled for March 10. Initially, 5G services will launch in capital cities at the federal and provincial levels, with plans to extend coverage to additional urban areas shortly thereafter.
During a press briefing in Islamabad, PTA Chairman Hafeez-ur-Rehman emphasized that enhancing connectivity is crucial for realizing Pakistan’s “Digital Pakistan” goals and fostering a cashless economy. He noted that regulatory and policy reforms have been put in place to support the deployment of next-generation mobile services.
Rehman pointed out that the government has eliminated the right-of-way fee, which previously slowed down fiber infrastructure projects. He stated, “This initiative, supported by the Ministry of IT and Telecom, will enable faster execution of infrastructure development.” He also mentioned that telecom operators are aware of the benefits of early network deployment, with many already preparing business cases and investment plans, which are expected to accelerate rollout processes.
The PTA leader highlighted that telecom companies have already ordered 5G equipment, and local production of 5G-compatible smartphones has begun, with around 500,000 to 600,000 units manufactured to date.
Drawing lessons from Bangladesh’s experience, Rehman explained that it took four years for operators there to fully comprehend 4G use cases. In Pakistan, the focus remains on improving the quality of 4G services for the 90% of users currently relying on it. By optimizing the use of available frequency bands, the aim is to significantly enhance service quality.
He also shared steps taken to facilitate a quicker 5G rollout, including granting operators a year to make necessary capital investments without having to pay upfront spectrum fees. This allows them to prioritize improving existing services and infrastructure.
Rehman underscored that improving 4G connectivity will not only enhance user experience but also increase data consumption, creating a positive feedback loop for operators and the overall telecom industry. He reaffirmed the government’s goal to match regional best practices in technology deployment while ensuring reliable, high-quality connectivity for the Pakistani population.
In response to questions, he mentioned that affordable 5G smartphones will be available, with plans to introduce installment schemes to make devices more accessible.
