Protests are scheduled across the country this weekend in response to the recent fatal shooting of a woman by an immigration officer in Minneapolis. Local authorities have criticized federal agencies for not including them in the investigation.
Organizers anticipate over a thousand demonstrations this weekend, triggered by the death of 37-year-old Renee Good, who was shot Wednesday by an ICE officer.
Minnesota law enforcement officials claim they’ve been excluded from the investigation into the shooting.
A district attorney stated last Friday that federal investigators collected Good’s car and shell casings from the scene.
The Trump administration has tried to portray Good as a “domestic terrorist,” asserting that the officer who shot her was acting in self-defense.
Cell phone footage, reportedly shot by the officer involved, shows him approaching her car and interacting with Good, who says, “I’m not mad at you.”
Following the officer’s approach and circling the vehicle, another officer can be heard instructing Good to exit her car before she attempts to drive away, leading to gunfire.
The person filming the incident can be heard uttering a curse word at the end of the footage.
The White House claims the footage supports the officer’s narrative of self-defense, despite not capturing the moment when the vehicle moved away or when shots were fired.
Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey, a Democrat, expressed concern, stating, “This is not the time to ignore the rules. We need to follow the law. It’s troubling that the Justice Department has already reached conclusions about these facts.”
He added, “Why aren’t they involving us in the investigation?”
On Thursday, Vice President JD Vance said the officer involved, identified as Jonathan Ross, has “absolute immunity,” a claim that local prosecutors dispute.
Court documents from June 2025 reveal Ross was dragged 100 yards along a road by a vehicle driven by someone under immigration enforcement.
Patrick O’Shaughnessy, a local resident, emphasized, “When federal agencies refuse to share evidence with local authorities, the public can’t trust that the investigation is transparent.”
