Protests broke out in Iran on Sunday following reports from state media that Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei had been killed in airstrikes attributed to Israel and the United States. Iranian outlets described the strikes as having demolished his central Tehran compound. Khamenei’s 36-year leadership transformed Iran into an influential anti-U.S. force, with its military influence expanding throughout the Middle East. Decades of diplomatic efforts to resolve disputes over Iran’s nuclear program had ultimately failed.
State media confirmed Khamenei’s death in the Israeli and U.S. attacks. The Fars agency reported that the Iranian government announced a 40-day period of national mourning and declared seven days of public holidays in his honor.
Images depict scenes of mourning and public reactions: crowds gathered in Tehran’s Enghelab Square, some holding posters bearing Khamenei’s image, while others mourned in the streets. Early morning protests were reported in multiple Iranian cities as citizens took to the streets to pay their respects to the Islamic Revolution’s leader. The atmosphere was one of grief, with many expressing shock and sadness at the loss.
