Pokémon Legends: Z-A Fall Release Date with Switch 2 Edition

Pokémon Legends: Z-A is set to launch on October 16, 2025, with pre-orders opening on June 5. The Pokémon Company has also revealed a new line of Mega Evolution merchandise available now at the Pokémon Center and confirmed a Pokémon Presents event scheduled for July 22.

The game will be released on both the Nintendo Switch and the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2. For those who missed out on preordering the Switch 2, fear not—you can still enjoy Pokémon Legends: Z-A on the original Switch and later upgrade to the Switch 2 version via an upgrade pack. While specific pricing for the upgrade hasn’t been disclosed, previous titles like Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom offered similar upgrades for around $10, so we can expect a similar price point for this title.

Both game versions will feature the same content, but players can anticipate enhanced framerates and sharper graphics on the Nintendo Switch 2.

“Pokémon Legends: Z-A marks a bold new chapter for the Pokémon gaming franchise, featuring an RPG-style narrative set within a single metropolis, combined with action elements and a real-time combat system unlike anything previously seen,” according to a press release. “Trainers can look forward to embarking on a new adventure in Lumiose City—an adventure shaped by the collaboration between people and Pokémon!”

This time around, players will select from Chikorita, Tepig, and Totodile as their starter Pokémon. Various other Pokémon have also been showcased in trailers. Unlike prior installments, which were set in the past, Z-A unfolds in Lumiose City, a locale inspired by Paris, France, integrating urban living with “Wild Zones” where players can capture Pokémon.

Combat has been revamped as well. Instead of traditional turn-based encounters, positioning plays a crucial role, and a surprise attack can be initiated by striking an opponent from behind—provided you remain unseen. Each trainer holds a rank, beginning at Rank Z, and players must work their way up to Rank A, where a significant event is said to occur.
