Philippine immigration authorities have confirmed that the father-son pair involved in the Bondi Beach shooting visited as “Indian nationals.” Earlier, Australian police also stated that the two suspects—who attacked a Hanukkah celebration at Sydney Beach—had traveled to the Philippines prior to the incident, which resulted in 15 fatalities and appeared to be motivated by ISIS.
According to BBC, citing the Philippines Immigration Bureau, the suspects entered the country on November 1 using Indian passports and departed on November 28. They reportedly listed the southern city of Davao as their final destination before returning to Sydney. Davao is a major city situated on the eastern coast of Mindanao, the Philippines’ largest southern island. It’s known that armed groups operate in some economically disadvantaged areas of central and southwestern Mindanao.
The Philippine military mentioned that it was unable to verify early claims that the suspects received “military-style training” during their stay in the Philippines, despite earlier reports suggesting otherwise.
This is an evolving story and updates will follow as more details emerge.
