The thrilling underdog tale is set to take a wild turn, as seen in the first teaser for Freaky Tales.
Set in 1987 Oakland, California, this film brings together an eclectic mix of characters—an NBA player, a crooked cop, a female rap duo, rebellious teens, neo-Nazis, and a debt collector. Among the ensemble, Pedro Pascal portrays a character who, after finishing his final job, refuses to take on another lawless endeavor. He confronts a criminal and dramatically incinerates the document containing details of the assignment.
A voice narrates, “The events that followed have sparked debate over the years, but this is the story as I perceive it,” as the action-packed, humorous, and chaotic aura of the trailer intensifies.
In addition to Pascal, the cast of Freaky Tales features the likes of Ben Mendelsohn, Jay Ellis, Normani, Dominique Thorne, Jack Champion, Ji-young Yoo, Angus Cloud, and Tom Hanks. The film is narrated and executive produced by Too $hort, an iconic figure in West Coast hip-hop. According to Lionsgate, “This vibrant concoction of explosive action, sharp humor, gory confrontations, and clever twists promises a thrilling experience.”

Freaky Tales is the brainchild of writers and directors Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, who previously directed the 2019 blockbuster Captain Marvel, starring Brie Larson as the titular superheroine. This film shattered records, earning over $1.13 billion globally, and made history as the first female-led superhero film to surpass the billion-dollar mark.
Debuting at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival, Freaky Tales received a generally warm reception from critics.
The film is set to hit theaters on April 4, 2025.
