A man armed with a knife attacked a doctor at the orthopedic department of Guangzhou University of Chinese Medicine’s First Affiliated Hospital, inflicting multiple stab wounds and causing serious injuries.
The attacker gained entry to the hospital early on September 22 and barricaded himself with Dr. Wang, the director of the orthopedic center, inside a consultation room before launching a brutal attack. According to sources familiar with the incident, the doctor was rushed to the intensive care unit with severe damage to several vital organs but remains out of immediate danger.
It was revealed that Dr. Wang had performed a knee surgery on the attacker several years ago, and the patient had visited him at the hospital just last week.
During a visit to the hospital yesterday, staff reported increased security measures following the assault. Armed police were stationed at the main entrance, and security checks were intensified at the entrance to the outpatient department from the underground garage—where the assailant is believed to have entered using a ride-hailing service.
The hospital has not released any updates regarding Dr. Wang’s condition.
Born in April 1970 in Shandong Province, Dr. Wang was the first postdoctoral researcher specialized in Chinese medicine orthopedics in Guangdong. With over 30 years of experience in basic research and clinical practice, he holds several prominent academic positions and has performed more than 2,000 joint replacement surgeries.
Many patients and their families expressed their sorrow in light of the incident, describing Dr. Wang as kind, approachable, and leave a memorable impression.
Since 2020, China has experienced at least 13 instances of violence against healthcare workers across various cities, based on incomplete statistics.
A legal expert noted that existing laws and regulations provide comprehensive measures for punishing violence against medical personnel. However, such extreme acts often stem from personal emotional outbursts, highlighting deeper societal issues that require attention from government authorities and all sectors of society.
