Pakistan has expanded its international internet capacity with the launch of the SEA-ME-WE 6 submarine cable system, the Ministry of Science and Technology announced Saturday. This 19,200-kilometer fiber optic network connects the country to major digital hubs stretching from Singapore to France.
Capable of transmitting over 100 terabits per second (Tbps), the system offers one of the quickest routes between Southeast Asia, the Middle East, and Western Europe, with low latency.
Pakistan has been allocated 13.2 Tbps of the total capacity, with an immediate activation of 4 Tbps — a significant boost to support cloud infrastructure, data centers, financial technology services, e-commerce, streaming platforms, and the broader digital economy.
Compared to previous SEA-ME-WE systems, the new infrastructure features more fiber pairs and more than doubles capacity, ensuring enhanced resilience along high-traffic Asia-Europe routes. Additionally, the system provides geographically diverse crossings through Egypt, improved fault protection, scalable bandwidth, and reduced operational costs for service providers.
Officials emphasize that the upgraded system will reinforce global internet redundancy and serve as a crucial component of Pakistan’s digital backbone. Furthermore, in February 2025, Pakistan Telecommunication Company Ltd successfully landed the Africa-1 submarine cable in Karachi.
