Cambridge, Massachusetts has recently celebrated a significant milestone with the election of two Pakistani Muslims to prominent city roles. Sumbul Siddiqui, a lawyer who hails from Karachi, has been chosen by the Cambridge City Council to serve as mayor for the 2026-27 term. This marks her third term in the position and she is notably the first Muslim and Asian woman to hold the mayor’s office in Cambridge.
Additionally, Burhan Azim, an engineer educated at MIT from Burewala, has been elected deputy mayor. He is also the youngest city councilor in Cambridge’s history.
Siddiqui first entered the city council in 2017 and has served as mayor twice between 2020 and 2024, establishing herself as a key figure in local politics.
