Pakistan was among the world’s top 10 markets for app downloads in 2024, with a total of 3.56 billion installs—marking a 9.2% year-over-year increase, according to data from IT consultancy firm Data Darbar reported by The News on Sunday. The country ranked ninth globally for downloads and twelfth for total hours spent on apps.
Pakistani users dedicated 79.1 billion hours to mobile apps this year, reflecting a 14.1% rise from the previous year, highlighting smartphones’ vital role in everyday life. Average monthly mobile data usage per user climbed to 8.4 gigabytes, with broadband consumption surpassing 13,000 petabytes across 134.8 billion mobile broadband subscriptions.
Despite this surge in usage, app development in Pakistan slowed down. The number of active developers decreased by 26%, totaling 1,400 in 2024. Android app releases fell by 55%, totaling 1,700, with a total of 2,500 new apps launched during the year—comprising 1,053 games and 784 iOS apps.
TikTok remained the leading app in Pakistan, with 32.4 million installs, followed by CapCut at 27.1 million, Facebook at 24.3 million, and WhatsApp at 22.7 million. WhatsApp Business also experienced high demand, with 20.9 million downloads. Among streaming services, Tamasha topped the charts with 10.2 million installs, ahead of Netflix with 3.7 million and Tapmad with 2.5 million.
Regionally, Pakistan outpaced neighboring countries in app download growth, surpassing Indonesia (8.6%), the Philippines (1.2%), and Mexico (1.2%). Meanwhile, Vietnam saw a 13.6% decline, and Egypt experienced a 1.7% drop.
Globally, mobile app activity remained robust, with 136 billion downloads, 4.2 trillion hours spent on apps, and mobile advertising expenditures reaching $195 million. In-app purchases worldwide amounted to $150 billion, while AI-related apps experienced a significant boost, with 1.49 billion downloads generating approximately $1.27 billion in revenue.
