OpenAI recently revealed the launch of “Atlas,” a new AI-powered web browser that integrates ChatGPT, aiming to directly compete with Google Chrome. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman announced this development during a live stream, emphasizing that Atlas is designed around ChatGPT technology to enhance browsing experiences.
This move comes amid increased efforts by OpenAI to challenge Google’s dominance, as Google rapidly incorporates more AI features into its search engine and overall platform. The market took notice, with Alphabet’s shares—owner of Chrome—dropping about 2.6% in afternoon trading, according to Reuters.
Atlas introduces a feature allowing users to access a ChatGPT sidebar from any window. This feature can provide page summaries, assist in product comparisons, or analyze data across various sites. In its agent mode, ChatGPT can interact with websites on behalf of the user, handling tasks like travel research or shopping from start to finish.
Currently, Atlas is available globally on Apple’s macOS. Plans are underway to roll it out soon on Windows, iOS, and Android devices. This development positions Atlas among a growing selection of AI-enhanced browsers, including Perplexity’s Comet and Opera’s Neon, which are adding tools to automate summaries, fill out forms, and generate code to attract users.
