An explosion at a biotech plant in northern China has resulted in the deaths of eight individuals, according to Chinese state media reports on Sunday. The total number of fatalities has increased by one since earlier reports.
Initially, state news agency Xinhua reported that seven people had died and one was missing following the explosion on Saturday morning at Jiapeng biotech in Shanxi Province, citing local authorities. Subsequently, Xinhua updated the death toll to eight and stated that the company’s legal representative had been taken into custody.
The facility is situated in Shanyin County, approximately 250 miles west of Beijing. Authorities continue to work on cleanup efforts, with reports indicating the presence of dark yellow smoke rising from the site of the blast. A team has been assigned to investigate the cause of the explosion.
This incident follows a similar tragedy in late January, when a steel factory in nearby Inner Mongolia experienced a blast that claimed at least nine lives.
