New Yorkers celebrated as Zohran Mamdani made history, becoming the city’s first Muslim mayor after a groundbreaking election victory. Mamdani’s win came despite aggressive criticism of his policies and Muslim background from business leaders, conservative media figures, and even Donald Trump.
In his victory speech, Mamdani told supporters, “If anyone can show a nation betrayed by Donald Trump how to defeat him, it’s the city that helped shape him.” The atmosphere at his election night gathering at a renowned Brooklyn concert venue was festive and energetic.
The 34-year-old candidate was born in Uganda to an Indian family and has been living in the U.S. since he was seven. He officially became a U.S. citizen in 2018.
Supporters gathered to listen as Mamdani addressed the crowd, with images capturing the celebration of his historic achievement.
