WhatsApp is introducing a new feature that lets users start real-time voice chats with Meta AI, making it easier to interact with the chatbot. This feature is currently available to select beta testers with the latest WhatsApp beta for iOS (version 25.21.10.76) through the TestFlight app, with plans for wider rollout soon, as reported by WABetaInfo.
To begin a voice chat, users can simply tap the waveform icon in the Chats tab. There’s also an option in voice settings to automatically start voice conversations when opening Meta AI, although this is turned off by default, so users have full control over when to initiate voice interactions.
Some users can also start a voice conversation directly from the Calls tab without extra steps. The updated interface offers pre-made prompts to help users kick off conversations on various topics—especially helpful for those unsure of what to ask. Additionally, users can quickly attach photos from their gallery or camera to support their questions or messages visually.
Voice chats can run in the background while users switch to other apps by tapping the “collapse” icon. This allows Meta AI to listen and respond while users read notes aloud or browse the web, creating a seamless experience similar to a phone call. Privacy features include muting the microphone or manually ending the session by tapping close or switching back to text chat.
On iOS devices, an orange indicator appears in the top-right corner whenever an app actively uses the microphone. This is part of Apple’s privacy system, which cannot be hidden or disabled by any app, including WhatsApp.
This new voice chat capability significantly reduces the need for typing, providing a helpful alternative for multitasking users, drivers, or individuals with mobility challenges.
