Contrary to popular belief, playing video games isn’t harmful to your brain. An increasing number of studies indicate that when played in moderation, video games can have positive effects, such as enhancing coordination, improving spatial awareness, and more. A recent study has gone a step further, revealing that gaming can also contribute to better mental health.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, researchers in Japan had an unintentional opportunity to explore this relationship. Retailers had implemented a lottery system for distributing Nintendo Switch consoles, allowing scientists to analyze the correlation between gaming and mental well-being. The study evaluated the responses of 97,602 individuals aged 10 to 69, as reported by The Brighter Side.

The findings indicated that owning a Nintendo Switch was associated with a 0.60 standard deviation improvement in mental health, whereas the PlayStation 5 showed a lesser increase of just 0.12 units.

While the statistics may sound technical, they highlight a significant impact of gaming on mental health, suggesting that Nintendo games might be particularly beneficial in this area. Generally, the Switch offers a plethora of cheerful, engaging games, whereas the PlayStation 5 is often recognized for its focus on intricate storylines.

The research further revealed that factors such as age and biological differences also play a role. Young female participants reported greater mental health improvements when using a Nintendo Switch compared to a PlayStation 5. Lead researcher Hiroyuki Egami stated, “Our findings challenge common stereotypes about gaming being harmful or simply offering temporary joy. We’ve demonstrated that gaming can enhance mental health and life satisfaction across a diverse range of individuals.”

This study presents compelling insights that may contribute to the ongoing shift in perspective regarding video games. Once dismissed as time-wasters back in the 1990s, gaming is now increasingly recognized for its potential benefits. While it may not be a solution for deeper issues, the mood enhancement and social interactions fostered by gaming can certainly have a positive impact on well-being.
