Netflix Teams Up with David Leitch for Gears of War Movie Adaptation
Netflix is capitalizing on the current trend of video game adaptations by developing a movie based on the hit game, Gears of War. The streaming giant has tapped David Leitch, a former stuntman who has transitioned into directing, to take the reins on this action-packed project.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Leitch is currently in talks to direct the film, while Jon Spaihts, known for co-writing the acclaimed film Dune, will handle the screenplay for the adaptation.
Leitch, alongside his wife Kelly McCormick, will produce the project through their production company, 87 North. Netflix will collaborate with The Coalition Studio, the Canadian game developer behind the Gears of War franchise, to bring this film to life.
Acquiring the rights to Gears of War in 2022, Netflix aims to create a major motion picture that could extend into other formats, such as an adult animated series.
First released in 2006, Gears of War is a third-person shooter game set on a planet called Sera, where humanity teeters on the brink of annihilation due to a war with monstrous underground beings known as the Locust Horde. The story follows Delta Squad soldiers Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago as they battle to save human civilization.
The game quickly became a top seller in 2006 and has since spawned a successful franchise on the Xbox 360, with eight installments including sequels, spin-offs, and prequels.
David Leitch’s journey in the film industry began as a stunt performer, doubling for stars like Brad Pitt and working on two of the Matrix films. He gained recognition as an uncredited co-director on John Wick before making his full directing debut with 2017’s Atomic Blonde. Since then, Leitch has established himself as a go-to action director, known for films such as Deadpool 2, Hobbs & Shaw, and Bullet Train. His upcoming project is How to Rob a Bank, slated for release in 2026, featuring actors like Nicolas Hoult, Pete Davidson, and Anna Sawai.
