Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is scheduled to meet with U.S. President Donald Trump on Wednesday in Washington to discuss Iran’s negotiations, Netanyahu’s office announced Saturday.
On Friday, indirect nuclear talks took place in Muscat, the capital of Oman, involving Iranian and U.S. officials. Both parties indicated that additional discussions are anticipated soon.
A diplomat acquainted with Tehran’s perspective informed Reuters that Iran emphasized its “right to enrich uranium” during these negotiations, while missile capabilities were not addressed.
Iran has consistently refused to include its missile arsenals—among the largest in the Middle East—in negotiations and insists on international recognition of its right to uranium enrichment.
Netanyahu’s office stated, “The Prime Minister believes negotiations must include limitations on ballistic missile development and a cessation of support for the Iranian axis.”
This upcoming meeting would mark the seventh between Netanyahu and Trump since the U.S. president returned to office in January last year.
Initially scheduled for February 18, the talks were moved earlier due to renewed engagement with Iran. Netanyahu’s spokesperson did not immediately clarify the reason for the change.
Last June, the U.S. participated in an Israeli-led military operation targeting Iran’s nuclear facilities, marking the most direct American military intervention against Iran to date. Iran responded with a missile attack on a U.S. base in Qatar.
Both the U.S. and Israel have warned Iran that any continuation of enrichment or ballistic missile programs could lead to further strikes.
Global and regional powers worry that failure in these negotiations might ignite another conflict between the United States and Iran, potentially affecting the broader oil-producing region.
Iran has threatened severe retaliation against any attack and has cautioned neighboring Gulf Arab countries hosting U.S. military bases that they could be targeted if involved in hostilities.
