A bus in Nepal veered off a mountain road and crashed into a frozen river, resulting in at least 19 fatalities, including a tourist from Britain, according to authorities on Monday. The accident occurred in the early hours of the morning, with the bus traveling from Pokhara, a popular tourist destination, heading towards Kathmandu. It tumbled more than 200 meters (approximately 655 feet) into the Trishuli River in Dhading district.
Prakash Dahal, a senior police officer, confirmed to AFP that out of 44 passengers on board, 19 had died and 25 were receiving medical care. Among the dead was one British national. Additionally, a Chinese citizen and a person from New Zealand sustained injuries, though further details were not provided.
District officials reported that rescue efforts had been completed by dawn, and the injured were now hospitalized. In a similar incident from July 2024, two buses carrying over 50 passengers were swept into the same river following a landslide, highlighting the hazardous conditions on Himalayan roads. Such deadly crashes are not uncommon in Nepal, often caused by poor infrastructure, poorly maintained vehicles, and reckless driving behaviors.
