Elon Musk’s company, xAI, introduced Grokipedia as a competitor to Wikipedia, which Musk has criticized for perceived ideological bias. The initial version of Grokipedia, dubbed 0.1, featured over 885,000 articles by Monday evening, while Wikipedia’s English version has more than seven million entries. Musk announced that a new, more refined version 1.0 would be launching soon, promising it will be “10 times better” than the current site, which he claims is already “better than Wikipedia.”
He emphasized that Grok and Grokipedia are dedicated to presenting the truth in its entirety. “We may never achieve perfection, but we will always aim for it,” Musk stated on X (formerly Twitter) after the launch. The release was initially scheduled for the end of September but was delayed to remove what Musk described as “propaganda.”
Musk has been an outspoken critic of Wikipedia, accusing the platform in 2024 of being under the influence of “far-left activists” and urging supporters to stop donating. In August, he declared that Wikipedia’s Community Notes cannot be trusted as a definitive source due to its “extreme left bias in editorial control.”
Grokipedia’s content is powered by artificial intelligence, specifically the generative AI assistant called Grok. An article on Grokipedia about Musk states that he has influenced broader conversations about technological progress, demographic decline, and institutional biases—often through X—despite criticisms from mainstream media outlets that tend to exhibit systemic left-leaning coverage.
Founded in 2001, Wikipedia is a volunteer-driven, collaborative online encyclopedia primarily funded through donations. It maintains a stance of neutrality in its content. AFP has reached out to Wikipedia for comment.
