Johnny Cage quickly captured the hearts of fans. He was famously portrayed by Linden Ashby in the 1995 movie Mortal Kombat. Matt Mullins also brought the character to life in the 2010 fan-made short film Mortal Kombat: Rebirth and reprised the role in the first season of Mortal Kombat: Legacy, with Casper Van Dien stepping in for season two.
Although Johnny Cage was absent from the 2021 rendition of Mortal Kombat, a nod to his character appeared at the film’s conclusion when Cole Young (played by Lewis Tan) encounters a poster of Cage while searching for new fighters to aid in defending Earthrealm.

As the sequel to the 2021 film, Mortal Kombat 2 will see the return of several fan-favorite characters, including Tan as Cole Young, Jessica McNamee as Sonya Blade, Josh Lawson as Kano, Tadanobu Asano as Lord Raiden, Mehcad Brooks as Jax, Ludi Lin as Liu Kang, Chin Han as Shang Tsung, Joe Taslim as Bi-Han and Sub-Zero, Max Huang as Kung Lao, and Hiroyuki Sanada as Hanzo Hasashi/Scorpion.
Newcomers to the cast include Urban as Johnny Cage, Tati Gabrielle as Jade, Adeline Rudolph as Kitana, Martyn Ford as Shao Kahn, Desmond Chiam as King Jerrod, Ana Thu Nguyen as Queen Sindel, CJ Bloomfield as Baraka, and Damon Herriman as Quan Chi.
Director Simon McQuoid returns for Mortal Kombat 2, working off a script penned by Jeremy Slater.
