Monster Hunter Wilds has barely been out for 24 hours, yet it has already claimed the sixth spot among the most-played games in Steam’s history. The title has also set a record for Capcom’s most successful PC launch, surpassing half a million players, and that figure continues to rise. As of around 9:40 AM ET, the game boasts over 1.3 million players online simultaneously.
This is a remarkable achievement, surpassing peak player counts for both Elden Ring and Baldur’s Gate 3. The surge in players is especially striking compared to Monster Hunter World, which peaked at just over 330,000 players. Wilds is clearly a major hit, particularly since this number does not include players on PlayStation or Xbox platforms.
Despite this massive player base and evident popularity, the game’s reviews tell a different story. With a “Mixed” rating and only 47% positivity among user reviews, Monster Hunter Wilds has drawn criticism for its lackluster optimization on PC. Even those who enjoyed the game have made light of its performance, with some reviewers quipping that the intense heat generated by their GPUs makes the desert environment feel all too real.

Others humorously noted that the game deserved “a solid 10…frames per second.” Fans have various suggestions, from using DLSS alternatives to simply waiting for more stable patches. While some players still find enjoyment in Monster Hunter Wilds, they caution that it demands a considerably powerful PC for a satisfactory experience.
Nonetheless, it’s hard to deny the excitement among hunters clamoring for their next target. Capcom’s subpar optimization could potentially be improved with future updates, allowing the game to function better on less powerful systems. Until those improvements arrive, players might want to focus on honing their skills for taking down beasts, as it appears Capcom has prioritized GPU usage.
